It’s the end of 1944 and for the Americans to continue to pressure the Japanese, they need to capture Palau from Japan. This opens up the opportunity to advance towards the Philippines which the Americans then liberate in 1945. The same year America conquers Iwo Jima, strategically important as the island lies just 1,000 miles south of Tokyo – the ideal place from which to launch aerial attacks on Japan. Tokyo is then razed to the ground and to avoid further reprisals from Japan, America drops two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nakasaki. Japan surrenders and the Pacific War is over.
