Japan had invaded and occupied a great portion of China since the early 1930s and in order to prevent the USA from curtailing its expansion throughout Asia, it unexpectedly and without warning attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbour with the intention of crippling the US capital ships. The Japanese continue their aggression and capture Singapore in February 1942 and then engage the Americans in conflict at The Battle of Midway later that year. The American victory at Midway is the turning point in the Pacific War.
