Work - 1915 – Black & White. The tale of a paper hanger (always a good source of mirth) called Izzy A. Wake and his hapless assistant, Chaplin. Other characters include the man of the house, his wife, an amorous Frenchman and a maid, the latter being the target of our hero’s attention. A large bucket of wallpaper paste and an exploding oven seem to settle matters!
The Tramp - 1915 – Black & White. Classic Chaplin – despite being a down and out, Charlie shows us that he can still be the perfect gentleman when it comes to looking after himself as well as the beautiful girl. Although tatty, his suit, bowler hat, tie and walking cane set him apart from the hoboes who try and steal his lunch and steal from the farmhouse where he has taken shelter. Even though he doesn’t get the girl and his circumstances have changed little, we see Chaplin in the closing scenes ever hopeful walking off into the distance.
Police - 1916 – Black & White. Even when released from prison, Chaplin soon returns to his life of crime and attempts a robbery with an old prison acquaintance. Naturally, all does not go to plan, the robbery fails but Charlie manages to woo the lady of the house who eventually gives him a dollar and off he goes, happy as can be – but the Police are not far behind!
A Jitney Elopement - 1915 – Black & White. Once again, Chaplin as the down and out comes across a girl, this one is to be wed, against her wishes, to a Count. Charlie manages to persuade her father that he is the Count and almost get away with it until the real Count turns up. Our hero escapes, with the girl, in a ‘jitney’ (hire car) and a text book comedy car chase follows. In this charming film, Charlie does get the girl in the end – hurray!
