Published by Walter Scott Ltd, Paternoster Square, London. The publishing date is not printed but is likely to be c1890s (the version of God Save the Queen contained within this book will be referring to Queen Victoria). Book in good condition with blue board cover and gold foil block. From the introduction, by John Macleay - The object of this collection is to reflect, in some measure, the military spirit of our country, so far as it reveals itself in our literature of poetry and song. The mere outline of British history is a romance of war, grandly thrilling. Fighting was a tonic, and braced our people, hardened our sinews, and now as a result, we bear upon our shoulders, with an odd confidence, the weight of an Empire unparalleled in extent and importance. This little book, published in the late 19th century is a fine collection of poems and ballads reflecting on the act of war. It is interesting in that its production, quite some time before the two World Wars, has an almost naive confidence.
